Last year, this blog did not exist. John was halfway through his law degree in a city he detested, and our lives as we had planned them were not what we’d expected. The funny thing is that all of our circumstances were a direct result of decisions we made, either actively or passively. We were not happy with our direction despite all of our planning and consideration. In these situations, we all know what to do: Stay positive and continue putting one step in front of another, even if it appears that the road ahead is bleak.
We talked about what we wanted in life, what we didn’t like, how to get there, the obstacles we faced, and whether it was even possible.
We had one of the most meaningful conversations we have ever had. It changed our lives, both as a couple and as individuals. That night, we decided to change things we didn’t like and to find ways to achieve our goals—whether it was as simple as creating a website or something as large as traveling around the world. We can sometimes appear crazy to those who are looking on. Does it matter if we are doing what we love?
We have realized that it is important to constantly ask yourself what you truly would like to do with your day, week, or life. Otherwise, you will drift and start reacting rather than enacting, and you won’t get to where you want. You can achieve anything you desire if you remove distractions and work hard. Is there any other choice if your happiness is at stake?
We are now leaps and bounds ahead of where we wanted to be a year ago. John graduated from law school last May, thank God. I spend my time writing, cooking, and taking photographs. We have set our sights on where we would like to be in a few years.
